Fishing does not merely refer to the act of catching fish; other sea creatures like crustaceans, molluscs, and echinoderms are also viable when it comes to fishing. The purpose of fishing is solely for the sake of survival, but some are hooked to the activity for sport or as a recreational livelihood. Rods are used for fishing freshwater fish - unlike the ones in saltwater, which are hauled using nets because of the enormous amount of fish during the season. Fishing fanatics do it for the leisure of having a hobby and gathering more information on fishing.

During the early years, 'Angling' was the term used for fishing which was purely for sports be it in freshwater or saltwater using a rod, line, and hook. As a sport it had value of considerable antiquity. Records have shown more information on fishing on Egyptians dating back to 2000BC were characterized with a rod and nets with hooks. A Chinese account during the 4th century mentioned that fishing during those days made use of silk as a line, bamboo as a rod, and a curved needle with cooked rice as bait. It is a specialized business that is mainly in the hands of three tribes: the Makassarese, the Bugis, and the Bajau. This means that only they have the authority to use this method.
