The jump rope is a widely known equipment used for leisure and fitness. There are many versions as to the history of jump ropes. Although, it is widely accepted that the practice of jumping through ropes originated a long time ago, which eventually travelled around the world and became not only as a favorite past time but also a form of exercise and a competitive sport.
It is said that jump ropes trace their roots way back in 1600 B.C., when the Egyptians used vines for jumping. The aborigines also jumped over bamboo, and early medieval paintings also show children playing jumping ropes. A more modern history of skipping ropes will tell you that it originated from the Netherlands, and made its way across the Atlantic in the 1600's.
Early Dutch settlers were the first people to jump ropes in the Northern Hemisphere. Thus, a more popular game of 'Double Dutch' was invented, where two people must hold two ropes and spin them in opposite directions while the jumpers jump into and over the ropes. The Dutch children will play it in front of their houses and they would play the game accompanied by all kinds of songs.
In the twentieth century, particularly in the 1940's and 1950's, more children in the American inner cities used the jump rope for leisure and a form for play. The girls would go to the sidewalks and play jump ropes with their mother's clothesline, wet if possible to make sure that the ropes are heavy enough to hit the ground just right. By the late 1950's the popularity of jumping ropes declined and the history took a back seat when it was dominated by the popularity of radio and television among the youths.
In the 1970's, an interest in jumping ropes as physical fitness and for overall health was widely recognized. Before long, programs have been introduced to increase jump rope awareness and promote jumping ropes as an exercise for the kids to keep them away from other unhealthy activities.
Jump rope events were organized which made jump rope history evolve into a really popular activity. These events include the creation of the American Double Dutch League (ADDL) by former police officer David Walker. His aim in creating the ADDL is for people to see the positive impacts of the Double Dutch for the community, especially the girls to lure them away from gangs, crimes, sex and drugs. McDonald's even sponsors some jump rope tournaments locally and nationally which have gained a wide following, and eventually became a legitimate sport.
The use of jump ropes both for play and for sport became really popular. Kids all over the world would use jump ropes, either as a single person or with other kids, to play. Moreover, athletes such as boxers would do jump rope exercises to increase their strength, agility, speed, timing and rhythm and to improve overall physical condition.
Various National Jump Rope Organizations were also established to promote jumping ropes and its positive impacts. The European Skipping Rope Organization (ESRO) was one of the first jump rope organization to be created that soon followed in America, Asia, and Oceania.
