Learning The Best Way to Swaddle Your Baby

Organic muslin swaddle is one of the best materials to use with newborn babies. There are so many benefits to swaddling, including better sleep and less crying episodes. Swaddles replicates the condition within a mother's womb- tight, warm and cozy. The baby associates these feelings to security and love. Another benefit is keeping the baby adequately warm and comfortable. But, in order to get these benefits and more, proper techniques must be observed when using organic muslin swaddle.

Step 1

Find a safe and flat surface to work on. Lay the blanket flat on this surface and in a diamond shape. If using a blanket, the best size is at least 40 inches by 40 inches. Using organic muslin swaddle that is specifically made for swaddling is best because it makes things so much easier. The blanket or swaddling material should be very thin and stretchy. This kind of fabric provides secure and tight swaddling but with enough wiggle room and breathability. This also helps in preventing the baby from getting too hot.

Step 2

Get hold of the topmost tip of the diamond and fold it down. How much to fold depends on the baby's length.

Step 3

Gently lay the baby on top of the folded blanket or organic muslin swaddle. The baby's neck should rest right on top of the fold.

Step 4

Carefully position the baby's arms at the sides. Or, take the arms and place it across the baby's stomach. This second position will make swaddling a bit difficult than when placing the baby's arms to his/her side. But, this position will be much more comfortable.

Step 5

Wrap the baby's arms with the left and right corners of the blanket or organic muslin swaddle. Hold the baby's arm in place while pulling the blanket's corner over it. Tuck the corner behind the baby's back. The blanket should be tucked snugly enough to keep the baby's arm in place. Do the same with the other arm.

Step 6

Next, close the swaddle by pulling the bottom corner upwards. Pull this corner up until it reaches the area between the baby's shoulders. Tuck the end of the blanket behind the left shoulder. In this position, the bottom corner of the blanket or organic muslin swaddle should be resting between the baby's shoulder and the blanket's bottom layer. Avoid pulling the bottom too tight. Allow some room for the feet to move. This space also helps in preventing overheating and in lowering the risk for developing hip dysplasia.

Step 7

Fold the right corner of the swaddle over the baby. The right and left corners should give the swaddle a V-neck. Keep the blanket in place over the baby's chest. Then flip over the blanket's right corner, which should be near the feet of the baby.

Step 8

Finish the swaddle and make it secure. Pull the flipped corner upwards and over the right shoulder. Tuck it at the back of the swaddle. Check that the organic muslin swaddle is snug enough but not too tight to restrict breathing and feet movements.
