Strategy for Listening to your Inner Guide

Article Category: Self Help

Author Name: James Nussbaumer

You may find moments during the month or, year, when you feel required to analyze your life and dos some goal planning.

You may remember, as well as review your year, and exactly what you achieved success in and specifically just what could have gone a bit better. This usually leads us forward along to the future, to simply and exactly look at we desire and to modify and go beyond.

As a financial advisor I'd often worry about my performance giving seminars and lectures—stage fright, I guess. But I learned that people wanted reassurance that changes in their current situation were possible. If we feel our life is in the hand of fate, we will remain resigned, insecure, and fearful.

But I found that when I focused on my own goal—to help people view themselves and their circumstances as improvable, regardless of what the markets appeared to dictate—not only was I more at ease myself, but the audience felt more at ease with my suggestions for ways they might work toward the changes that would give them a sense of steadiness and goal planning in their lives.

A Course in Miracles helps to see that the absence of a clear goal set in advance for the outcome you seek makes your efforts doubtful, opening the door for fear, and the goal never being accomplished.

But not to worry; your inner divine Guide, or we can say, Trusted Advisor within you, will sort this out for you. You might be asking, "Where in hell has He been all along?" The answer is simple: He has been watching the ego in you beat itself up.

Speaking of berating oneself—and before I move on, so this might be seen a little more clearly—please bear with me while I share an experience I had in writing my first book, The Master of Everything.

It may not seem to be a big deal at this particular time, however I offer it as an example of one of those battles we all contend with every day of our lives. I only laugh over this now because of the tremendous amount of healing I've experienced since.

This also proved to me that the Holy Spirit was sorting out truths and falsities for me, and it did take some time.

Before my incarceration, while an investigation was being conducted on my criminal case, which led to my indictment by the grand jury, my attorney advised me to put a halt to my business travels and to sit tight, remain near home, and wait for the inevitable. He wanted me close by.

At this point my career was over and my business was broke—twenty-five years as a financial advisor down the drain. While I stayed close to home, my tasks also included avoiding phone calls from bill collectors and coping with the mortgage company gearing up to foreclose on the house. I spent a good amount of time renting movies.

I had never been a fan of country music legend Johnny Cash, but decided to rent the move about his life story, Walk the Line. I was captured by the way the movie portrayed him—that somehow the world had missed out on what a gentle and caring man he was.

I was also impressed with the relationship he pursued and eventually developed with June Carter, who later became his wife. I describe in my second book, Mastering Your Own Spiritual Freedom, how the movie motivated me to run out and buy a few Johnny Cash music CDs.

Fast forward to my incarceration in Belmont Prison, where I began my notes and writing to compile The Master of Everything. The ego in me was constantly reminding me that I was not in a position to undertake such a project.

My heart was haunted by wrong-minded thinking, such as "Who am I to write a book, let alone a spiritual one?" I lacked computer resources and had only minimal access to a poor-quality typewriter, so my only choice was to start writing in longhand.

But regardless, the urge set me to writing on a legal pad, then filtering and polishing my words before rewriting the text into composition journals I was able to purchase through the prison commissary. Those journals were as sophisticated as I could get until I could seek outside help, or possibly a publisher. I was thinking big, and my ego would tell me "too big." Naturally, all of this was very discouraging.

In recent years prior to prison, I had broken my right hand, the one I write with, and was told by the doctor I could expect some arthritis to set in and become a potential problem. Sure enough, he was right.

After several months of writing what I called my "rough draft" or "comprehensive notes," I began to notice how sloppy and childish-looking my longhand writing appeared, and I was soon calling it "slop." I was becoming more and more disgusted with my "slop" and would often scold myself that "No one is ever going to want to read this slop." The pain the arthritis sent through my fingers, hand, and wrist didn't help my attitude.

Need I add that prison is a nasty, negative, dirty, foul, depressing, and oppressive jungle to live in? This place will destroy in a moment any flicker of optimism that the best of the most positive individuals could ever summon. My mental picture of my "slop" began to spread to my belief about the message I was trying to convey. "A bunch of slop that no one will ever want to read about."

At what I then believed to be my midway point in this journaling effort, I angrily ripped the entire project to shreds and found the nearest trashcan. This little tirade could be compared to missing a three-foot putt to win a golf match against your buddy, and then proceeding to not only throw your putter, but your entire golf bag of clubs into the nearby pond.

I told myself I was finished and sulked like a little boy for a couple of days.

Not surprisingly, if you know me, after that few days of sulking I was back up on my "writing horse," and something was burning inside me to simply start over and not worry about my poor penmanship. After all, I would be doing a lot of time in prison and I needed to use it to my advantage. I was told by my thoughts to just settle down, write at a slower pace, and get the message out; that somehow it would all come together.

One day, when an inmate who bunked near me was packing to go home the next day, he tossed a book onto my bunk. He was leaving it behind, and for whatever reason had decided to give it to me. It was about the life of Johnny Cash.

While leaving a few things behind when being released from prison is normal and customary, this man had no idea whether or not I was a fan of Johnny Cash, and I really didn't think much about it myself. In fact, the book sat for a few days before I decided to page through it.

But when I did, I particularly noticed a picture of a piece of lined paper, like from a legal pad, with Johnny's handwritten words to a song he was writing, which of course became a huge hit. The song was in the movie Walk the Line, and if you're ahead of me here, then you will suspect that I'm about to say that Johnny Cash's handwriting was indeed "slop." But I'm sure he never looked at it that way.
