The Holy Spirit sets a goal for us that is general. He will work with you at your invitation to make it specific. There are certain and specific guidelines He provides for any situation; but keep in mind that at first we may not yet realize their universal application.

Therefore, you will need to use these guidelines separately as you become aware of them; and you will become aware of them gradually until you can safely look beyond each situation with an understanding far broader than you now possess. Healing the split-mind is an ongoing process for all of us.

I found that while I was writing my books in that volatile and often violent din of the cell block, I had accelerated my learning and healing process, due paradoxically to the constant uncertainty of daily life in there. One never knows from one minute to the next when attack is going to sneak up from behind; surprising violence can erupt at any moment.

In there I literally survived by my constant use of "tunnel vision"—a one-track concentration on the principles of A Course in Miracles, which is why I believe I was able to absorb the material extremely deeply.

You could say that I have lived completely within myself through this tunnel vision. I hope your life conditions are considerably more pleasant than my prison life had been; but let me share with you my own way for staying on the spiritual path. I am convinced that if it works in a place like that, it will work for you anywhere you find yourself.

In any situation in which you are uncertain, the first thing to consider is this: What do I want to come of this? And next: What is it for?

In your ego's way of operating, no questions are asked. It will usually dive in and "go with the flow," so to speak. The situation becomes the determiner of the outcome, which can be anything. The reason is evident:

The ego—the uncertain and fearful, doubting aspect in us all, doesn't know what it wants to come of most any given situation. It surely is aware of what it does not want, but only that. It has no positive goal at all. We've all heard it said: "It looks like you walked right into that mistake."

No one wants to fail or lose, but often failure or loss seems to be waiting for us.

A Course in Miracles further helps us see that without a clear-cut, positive goal set at the onset, the situation seems to just happen, leaving all kinds of room for additional ego-based input. Though it makes no sense, the situation continues to develop. Then we look back on it with more ego-based, concrete thought, trying to understand or analyze our foolish thinking, or blame another person or group for the outcome.

The ego may even tell itself how ridiculous it is. Not only is our poor judgment now in the past, but we have no idea what was truly intended to happen, because no goal was set with which to bring the means in line.

At this point the only judge we have is whether or not the ego likes the way the situation turned out. It can sound like this: "Is this acceptable, or am I going to end up making a fool of myself?"
