Finding the Cure for Cancer

Cancer is classified as the second leading cause of death worldwide. In 2015, it brought about 8.8 million deaths globally. One in 6 deaths is caused by cancer. There were approximately 14 million new cases documented in 2012 and it is expected to rise by 70% in the next 20 years.

Though there is no definite cancer cure as of yet; however, there are many types of treatments available for patients depending on the type of cancer and how complex it is.

The main forms of cancer treatments are as follows:

Surgery is a procedure done when cancer needs to be removed from the body. Surgery mostly requires slicing through the skin, muscles, or even the bones. No pain will be felt during the procedure because of anesthesia but after the operation, these can be distressing and recovery will take time.

Surgery works in either removing an entire tumor which is contained in one area. It can also debulk a tumor which means that it removes some, but not all of the cancer tumors, as removal of the whole tumor may damage an organ or the body. Surgery is also done when it is needed to ease tumors that are causing pain or pressure to the patient.

Chemotherapy is the type of treatment that uses drugs to kill cancer cells. It aims to slow down or stop the growth of cancer cells. Cancer cells are known to divide and grow rapidly. It is used as a cancer cure, lessen the chance for it to resurface, and slow or stop its growth in the body. It is also used to ease pain felt by the patient by shrinking tumors.

Radiation therapy is the type of cancer cure or treatment uses high amount of radiation to shrink tumors and kill cancer cells. This treatment does not kill cancer cells or shrink tumors right away. Though it takes days or weeks of treatment before cancer cells die, these cancer cells will keep on dying even for months after the therapy is over.

There are two types of radiation therapy which are External Beam Radiation which comes from a machine that aims radiation to the cancer. It does not touch the patient but moves around the body sending radiation to the part where the cancer is located in a specific part of the body. The second is the Internal Radiation Therapy wherein the source of radiation is put inside the body. The source can be solid or liquid. The solid source is called brachytherapy wherein seeds, ribbons, or capsules are placed in the body near the cancer. While the liquid form is received through an IV line. The liquid radiation travels through the body, looking for, and killing the cancer cells.

The other types of cancer treatment are:

Immunotherapy wherein it aims to help the patient�s immune system fight cancer.
Targeted therapy in which it targets the changes in the cancer cells that help them grow, divide, and spread in the body.
Hormone therapy which is used to slow down or entirely stop the growth of breast and prostate cancers that grows because of hormones.
Stem cell transplant is the procedure that restores blood-forming stem cells for patients with blood destroyed by chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Precision medicine is an approach wherein it allows cancer doctors to choose treatments that will be most effective to patients depending on the genetic makeup of the disease.

Though cancer cure is not definite at this time, there are a lot of ways for a patient to survive and triumph over this disease. Prevention and early detection is still the best way to avoid acquiring cancer. Make sure to live a healthy life and avoid habits that may cause this disease.
