The Soap and Water Method
The simplest way to clean your jewelry is to use warm soapy water and clean the accessory with a fine-bristled toothbrush. Although most jewelry stores will give you a cleaning agent, this solvent may not be the best solution to grease, oil, and discoloring. Even ultrasonic cleaners destroy vintage necklaces. But if you insist on using specialist cleaners, remember this formula: gemset, gold, and platinum must NOT be cleaned using a silver-dip type cleaner. After cleaning, the piece must be allowed to completely dry.
A Jewelry Care Kit
Aside from cleaning the jewelry gently, have a kit available in case you need to immediately clean your jewelry. Each piece has its use – glue for reattaching gems to fancy costume jewelry, chamois cloth for polishing, Q-tips for cleaning those hard-to-reach spots and crevices, and tweezers for resetting the stones.

Keep your jewelry away from anything that could contaminate them. This includes water, cosmetics, and even the body's natural oils. Avoid getting your accessories wet. That said, the only time they should be in contact with water is when you are cleaning them.
Never wear your precious necklace or earrings when you are swimming in the pool or at the beach, when you are working in the garden, playing sports, or cleaning your home.
Periodic Checking
Check the pieces every now and then so you can do damage control early on. For example, ensure that a clasp is secure, or that a piece is not missing a single stone. Check for discoloration, scratches, or tarnishing issues.
