... and you 'd better sit up and take notice! Customer's concerns over Internet privacy is on the rise and for good reason!

Due to SPAM and phishing e-mails, identity theft and viruses, it's completely clear that subscribers have an increased awareness about their personal data privacy and data protection.

And it's not only about e-mail addresses and credit card numbers either. More and more companies are gathering vast amounts of information on their clients surfing and buying habits, which can provide fascinating insights, but also presents a security risk.

We'll see that more and more individuals are demanding to be notified about how companies are managing people's personal data. And every website and business is gone over with a fine-tooth comb to see if they deliver on the commitments made. So companies must comply, or prepare to be left behind and in some cases, heavily fined if they data breach or are not doing the right things, and it's all about trust.

How you can assure Internet privacy for your customers:

1. Be properly trained - so you understand what the small business data privacy landscape really looks like, and know what you need to do to comply.

​2. Establish a privacy Statement and honor it - individuals will want to know what your internet privacy and security policy is, so you 'd better have one! It should have the following elements in it:

- Secure data: All data must be protected by firewalls, virus protection and any other measures you can use to ensure data privacy and data security.-

- Limit access: Access to personal data must be granted to just those employees that need to access it.

- Opt-in: Always ask your customers if it's OK to use their personal data, tell them what you have to have the data for and only use the data for that reason.

- Double check: If you can not be sure of the users identity (e.g. when they enter an e-mail address for a news letter) have the request confirmed.

- Permission: Never share personal data with any 3rd party without the customers approval (don't forget to go through the Internet privacy policy of the 3rd party, and you will also need to enter into an agreement with them in some cases before sharing the personal data).

- Customer access: Give customers easy access to their own personal data, and an opportunity to adjust it (this does not have to be online, but this is the preferred method to reduce management overhead).

- Local data: If you use a local means of saving data (i.e. on the customers PC, like cookies), explain why and how you use this important information.

- Enforce: Make sure you apply this privacy policy, if possible by becoming a member of a 3rd party data privacy program, like Data Protection Services.

- Children: This is an adult game, do not attempt to collect personal data from children (Certainly, not a person younger than 13 in any event and check if you need to get a parents consent also).

- Change: Explain precisely what you will do when you modify the privacy policy, and how you will notify people of these changes.

3. Make this information available web based - Make sure that your Internet privacy policy is prominently available on your site, preferably from every page from the footer is a common place people look. Also, make all contact information (e-mail, address, phone number, etc.) available in the same way. You don't want your subscribers to have to search for the information.

4. Opt-in and out - If you provide information using by subscription, you must make it as easy to opt-out as it is to opt-in.

5. Handle all concerns - Even with an Internet privacy policy prominently accessible on your web site, customers will contact you, to double-check that they can count on your business with their personal data. This is not necessarily about a lack of trust, often customers want to be reassured by a real person. So make sure that you can handle all those inquiries, swiftly and reassuringly.
