Where did the idea of ​​the VCL project come from?

I manage Freda Salvador's social media and spend a lot of time on Instagram following other brands, big and small. Because small brands have so much power now, their audience can grow pretty quickly and I remember seeing small brands that I was looking for from the beginning to be overthrown by bigger brands. I know this happens all the time, in fast mode, the brands are copying, but it started to make me more and more sad and upset that these little brands have their products ripped off on Instagram. I have so much passion to help young decision makers and people like Cristina and me, to live our dreams and make so many sacrifices along the way. So it was like I did not want to buy that kind of product, but I wanted to support local small businesses. I want to know where the product comes from, I want to know who makes it and why. So it was the impetus behind all that.

Does this type of shopping require more effort on your part and a more thoughtful strategy?
Yes, but I appreciate it. It's so much more fun for me. Before, I had never liked going to a shopping mall and shopping in Zara. I'd be like, "I hate everything in my closet, I just need something new," so I just added 30 pieces to the cloakroom. It was not a pleasant experience from start to finish and I never felt so good, even when I had the pieces. It's like, "I feel cuter but it's not a topic that I'm passionate about." Now the experience is so much more enjoyable and you never know what you're going to find. Vintage is one of my passions, as are consignment garments and those made locally. I am in my second year and I have never been tempted to look at or even think of .

Sometimes, when the products are really cheap, you do not think twice about buying them. Then you know that you have a closet full of things that you have worn only once and to which you have no connection. Did you finally get rid of everything you had before starting this project?

I did a huge purge but I still have some things of quality or sentimental value. If I love them, I will still wear them. I certainly have a lot of pants and old sweaters that I never want to get rid of.

Have you thought about the environment, the positive impact of sustainable purchasing?

Yes, absolutely. When I was cleaning in the closets, I realized that I was giving so much. Bags and bags of clothing. It was so cheap and so easy to get rid of and separate from it. Things came and went so fast, and I would make myself feel better by saying, "Oh, I pass it to someone." But if everyone has eight bags of clothes a year, they give it, that's so much. I realized that there had to be a better way.

That's so true. Once I put things down at Goodwill and sorted them in my stuff, my daughter's sweatshirts, etc., and the guy there was like, "That was really nice of you ". You do not always have time to sort it out and so it is shipped to the next place, which is probably a dump.

My style is much more adventurous because I have better things. I have pieces that speak to me. You fall in love with each piece instead of trying to put whole outfits together. My closet is very portable now, because there is no "outfit", it's just a collection of great pieces. Plus, my style is better because I do not have the same things as everyone else.

So you think that your approach to shopping has definitely changed?
Yes. I shop differently now. I do not go out looking for specific things, I buy what I fell in love with, if it's in my price range, and I build my wardrobe instead of storing my closet for the season. This completely changed my perception of my closet.

What advice would you give to people who want to try themselves?
Just plant the seeds. You do not have to change all your wardrobe; even if it's 80/20 or 60/40, it's a step in the right direction.
