A caliper is defined as a measuring device that is used to record the distance between two opposite sides of an object varies to different types for different purposes. It is first introduced in 1851 by American Joseph R. Brown. People from the field of engineering, mechanical woodcrafts and metal works commonly use calipers. The history of calipers can be traced back to Ancient Roman and Greek civilization who were using calipers made of wooden piece with a fixed or a movable jaw. Calipers varies into different types depending on its purpose and capability. Some of these include inside calipers, these are used to to measure the internal size of an object and requires manual adjustments for fitting. Another one is the outside caliper. Outside calipers are used to measure the external size of an object. It can provide a high degree of accuracy and repeatability.

Another type and the most common one is the Vernier Caliper that gives an extremely precise measurement in measuring both the internal and external distances accurately. Vernier caliper comes into different sizes to choose from. Because of technology, different innovations are introduced like calipers with LCD that displays the current readings and measurement and helps in reducing the risks of human error.

Another type of calipers is the divider caliper and is popularly known as compass used for marking out locations. It is also used in measuring distance between two points. professionals in the field of medicine use divider calipers for surgeries. Next is the Oddleg calipers used to scribe a line for a set distance from the work piece edge to a predetermined distance.

Last are dial calipers, same as Vernier calipers are the most common. The central feature which is the dial indicators make it easier to use and read measurement. It uses rack and pinion mechanism system that transfers the movement of the jaws of the caliper to the dial indicator and the reading shown on the indicator is combined with the value shown on the beam scale.

Although it may seem simple and easy to use, accurate measurement still depends on how it will be used properly. Today, digital calipers are preferred more than traditional calipers because measurements are easy to read. Most digital caliper can switch between standard and metric units and some can provide output readings ready for computer and printer.

To get the measurement accurately, set your calipers to zero by pressing the zero/on button. Your calipers have the outside jaws for measuring the outside dimensions and thickness of an object. Be sure that the object and the jaws are parallel for a more accurate reading. On the other hand, the inside jaws are used to measure the depth from one surface to the next while the step gauge is for measuring the distance between one edge and the edge above it.
