What Do Multimeter Settings Mean?

Article Category: Computers and Technology

Author Name: Franklin Williams

At first glance, a multimeter can be an intimidating instrument, since its dial is filled with unfamiliar symbols. But once you get used to the multimeter settings, youll find its useful for performing a wide variety of tests at home.

What Is a Multimeter?

It is a handheld testing device that is also called|known as a volt-ohm meter. It measures values such as current, resistance and electrical voltage. Professional electricians use this tool to diagnose electrical problems in appliances, wiring systems, motors and power supplies.

There are two types of multimeters analog and digital. Analog multimeters measure amperage and its readings appear on a dial with a graduated scale via a moving needle. Thus, it may take some practice for beginners to learn how to read it.

Analog multimeters are best used as ammeters, since they have a high sensitivity and low resistance, with the scales going down to 50 microamperes. In addition, these tools can effectively detect small voltage changes since you can look at how the needle moves across the scale.

Digital multimeters are the ones commonly sold in hardware stores and feature an LCD screen where the readings appear. There are basic versions as well as more advanced ones for professionals such as electronics engineers. They are best used as voltmeters since digital versions have a higher resistance.

These multimeters tend to cost more than their analog counterparts. However, the price difference is not significant among basic multimeters but professional versions of course will cost more.

Understanding Multimeter Settings

The multimeter has various settings based on whether you are measuring DC or AC current, as well as amps, ohms or volts. You can then move the dial to the appropriate setting. The dial may feature the following abbreviations V (volts), A (amps) and (ohms).

AC (alternating current) may be denoted with a tilde or squiggly line while DC (direct current) may use a straight line or a series of dashes. The reason for these symbols is that AC changes directions numerous times per second, while DC flows in a single direction.

If your multimeter automatically senses your measurements scale (known as an auto-ranging), the dial will be relatively easy to set. But if it is manual-ranging then it will be a little more complicated.

A manual-ranging dial means that you have to give the tool a general idea of how low or high the measurement will be, to ensure accuracy. Thus, you have to be familiar with the abbreviations used to denote very small or very large numbers. These include:

M (mega) stands for one million
k (kilo) stands for one thousand
m (milli) stands for one-thousandth
(micro) uses the Greek letter Mu and stands for one-millionth

For example, 400 mV means four hundred millivolts or 1/400,000th

To ensure you are getting the most precise measurement, set the dial a little higher than the reading you expect to get, but not too high that it would be undetectable. For instance, if you are expecting a 15V measurement, you should set your multimeter to 20V.
