Size Does Matter

Some riding styles also require that your spur be of a specific size. Dressage riding, for example, requires that the shanks of the spur be of the right size for the horse to feel it. If not, then your kicking would just anger the horse. If the spur is too long, then you might accidentally injure the horse.

Always refer to the guidebook of your riding style for certain rules regarding the recommended size and lengths for spurs. There are even instances of riders being disqualified from races due to wearing an improper spur on their boots.

Get the Fit Perfectly

The spur of your choice must fit comfortably at the heel of your boot and is adjacent to the very tip of the heel. Also, the shank of the spur must be of the right length, so it does not cause you to trip when walking.

Fortunately, a reputable saddlery will have the knowledge to assist you in finding the right spur for your size and riding style. Just make sure that whatever spur you purchase does not ultimately hinder you from walking or riding comfortably when you put them on.

Mind the Strap

When it comes to the strap of the spur, riders always have two choices: leather and synthetic. Both materials have their own advantages but one might work better in some instances. Synthetic straps are ideal for beginner-level riding as they are durable and do not need regular cleaning or oiling.

However, as a rider moves towards more professional levels of riding such as show riding and hunter classes, leather is highly recommended. Leather straps might be prone to cracking but they complement any type of boot and spur.

For the Western riding style, leather straps are recommended over synthetic ones.. Also, unlike English spur straps, the rider is encouraged to get �fancy� with their straps with the inclusion of rhinestones and studs.

Not a lot of saddleries would have these elaborate western straps for spurs readily available. However, those that do find a genuine one can be certain that they would be turning heads for all the right reasons in any riding event.
