Family structures have changed significantly in the last years. A number of family variations have been formed, all of which have their unique characteristics .

The Nuclear Family
This is known to be the conventional family structure. It is consists mainly of two parents and their children. This is considered to be ideal and is held highly in society. Children who grew up in nuclear families are said to obtain stability and strength that come from their parents. Based on a US census data, majority of children are still part of a nuclear family.

Extended Family
This kind of family structure is composed of two or more adults that live under one roof. They can either be related by blood or by law. This is a type of family wherein there are many relatives living in the same house with a common goal of running and following household rules and raising and nurturing the young generation in the family. Extended families include grandparents, uncles and aunts, and cousins. Extended families are usually formed due to financial concerns and those who want to care for their older relatives.
Single Parent Family
This is consists of only one parent raising a child or children. It can either be a single dad or single mom. Children raised in this family structure are said to be more close to their parent as they make it a point to work together as a team and make each other's lives easier. Although there are also cases of rebellious children in this family structure, such case can still be lessened through proper parenting. A single parent family has its share of challenges , some of which are the following: sole parenting responsibility, financial issues, and lack of time. However, many families in this category still manage to get by through the support of friends and relatives.
Step Family
Since most marriages end up in divorce, there are high chances of remarrying. This paved the way for blended or step family to emerge into the scene. This kind of family structure basically comprise of two families who are separated by law and merging into a single unit. This structure may be similar to that of the nuclear family, but it comes with its share of challenges, such as who's going to raise who, the adjustment period, schedules and the like. If you are in a step or blended family, you must need to work together as a team for your children's welfare. On the other hand, if you're a child who have blended parents and siblings, know that you are lucky to have many people who love you and whom you can call family.
Grandparents Family
This family structure is formed due to the parents' absence in the child's life. This could be because of separation, illness, and untimely death among others, which results from grandparents to step up and raise the child on their own.
Whatever family structure you belong to, remember that there is no right and wrong family. As long as love, support, and communication are present, it's always a good family to belong to.
