On Taking Happiness Seriously

The past year may be full of challenges, so this year, make it a commitment to up your game and take happiness seriously. You may have made this promise countless times and failed, but as they say, New Year, new beginnings. And now is the perfect time to do just that. If you're running out of ideas how the following tips might help:
1. Identify where is lacking in the happiness department
This idea is from the theory of balance from the Buddhists. What you do is draw a large circle and then create segments representing and labeling each segment with a part of your life that you want to evaluate. You choose what particular area of your life, such as career, relationships, recreation, finances, family, health, and the like. Shade each representation according to the level of satisfaction.
Your drawn circle must be an outline of the areas of your life that both need improvement and attention, and those that you know you have full control of. Filling the wedges of the circle and how much you put in each is not really the issue, the objective is to get clarity and a new perspective. We've been so focused on the negatives that we forget to be truly happy all because the negatives distort our views in life. However, steps no matter how small to boost one's happiness can improve how you view life in general

2. Look at the big picture
Jot down what you like about an area in your life. Say, about your job. Make sure to be very specific about it. It doesn't matter how small or simple they are. The goal here is to list down all things you are grateful for your job and be able to shift your perspective.
Practice every day to write down at least 3 things you're grateful for upon waking up in the morning. It is the perfect time to assess your life and count your blessings. This way, you're allowing your brain to always think of the positive and dish out the negative.
Just 21 days of this gratitude practice and you are able to create new neuron connections that will help in enabling optimism. Doing this task also improves your stress handling ability and lifts your mood.
3. Early to bed
Happiness and gratitude both factor in for a life full of meaning and joy, but so also is discipline. Having a sense of control is said to be more crucial than that of happiness alone. There are times when in order to be happy, you have to either deprive yourself of something or ask more of yourself. Remember, happy and joy-filled life isn't always about the present. It's for the long haul.

As 2020 begins, it is okay to change progressively. Take it one day at a time. There is no need to pressure yourself. If you think it's too late, just think of it this way, even the snail gets to its destination. Just walk towards your goals and achieve them even if you go slow.
