What do you most recall about your childhood years? Do you remember living with your grandparents or cousins? Mostly, stories were comprised of late night stories with grandma or fishing by the lake with grandpa. There were also frequent picnics with cousins, aunts and uncles especially since you all live under one roof.
Looking back at those good, old times, one can say that family life has gone through a lot of changes in terms of living together. In the recent study conducted by the New York Times, American families are slowly easing into the extended family life once again. For the past years, it has been nuclear families (consists of 2 parents and children) sharing the same household. The extended family that is considered very typical in an American household especially in the 20th century are comprised of multi generations of aunts, uncles, children, grandparents, and parents.
While it is not entirely defined as to the reason why there has been a rise in the number of extended families, the following hope to somehow explain the surge:
1. The economic slump has somehow forced some members of the family to go back home in their extended families to either save money or perhaps find a temporary shelter while still looking for a stable job.
2. People are now more health conscious and want to live longer. So what they do is eat healthily with the family, stay active, and spend more quality time with their loved ones.
3. senior citizens usually have their houses all for themselves, making their huge living spaces available for more family occupants.
There can be a lot more benefits of having an extended family in the house, but there can also be downsides to this one. Among the benefits is in terms of raising children. As they say, it takes a village to raise a child. And you will exactly be living in this saying since there will be more adults in the house who will help in nurturing your child. This will aid in taking most of the pressure on parents to be the sole role models to their children and the sources of disciplining in the household. Aside from this, grandparents are great sources of information from the past, often linking family history from years and years.
The downside , however, is that the presence of multiple families and generations in the same house will also result to conflict. There will be issues of meddling and interfering especially when personal problems are being dealt with. Succinct to say, in an extended family, privacy issues are a big concern. And since attitudes, styles, and opinions vary in an extended family, it holds true that there will be some clashes between generations that might come up.
But no matter the differences, family is family. Should conflicts arise, it is best to tackle things with constant communication and openness. Afterall, life is short and it is best spent and celebrated with family every day.
