Each state also has its own data security and privacy laws, which are overseen by state attorney generals. Since these only apply to particular sectors, consumers are pushing legislators to enact state-level privacy laws.

So far, only California has been able to enact a comprehensive data privacy law. The California Consumer Privacy Act was enacted on 1 January 2020. The CCPA introduces wide-ranging consumer rights and imposes substantial responsibilities on organizations that collect personal data. These include informing users about how and when their data is collected, and allowing them to correct, delete and access this information.

Other notable state-level privacy laws include:

Consumer Data Protection Act (Virginia), which will become effective on 1 January 2023.
Colorado Privacy Act, which was passed in June 2020.
New York SHIELD ACT, which became fully enforceable as of March 2020.
